Kagool founder cycles 600km for cancer charity

6th September 2018

Executive Chairman and Founder, Chris Short is cycling from San Francisco to Los Angeles to fundraise for Cardiff based charity

Christ Short has travelled to America to tackle a 600km cycle challenge from San Francisco to L.A.  Unfortunately, like many people, Chris is no stranger to the devastating impact that cancer has on families and has been an active fundraiser for some time.

About the ride

The six-day ride begins in San Francisco on 9 September and takes all cyclists across some challenging landscape. Although the route promises to have some difficult inclines along the coast, there will be some spectacular sights.

There’s 40 people in total taking part in the ride. Chris is funding the challenge himself as well as making sizeable donations to charity.

The charity

Chris is riding to raise money for a charity local to the Kagool offices in Cardiff. Velindre Cancer Centre deliver treatment and care to patients. Commenting on the event, Chris explained his reasons for taking on the challenge, ‘I’ve committed to cycling along the West Coast of The US for a charity for which I have experience with. Both my parents received treatment and exceptional care there through what were very difficult times.’

Visit the JustGiving page if you’d like to sponsor Chris’ ride.

En route

Day 1

After a difficult first day with lots of hard climbs and very little sleep on the plane Chris and the team were delighted to find out the overnight campsite was located around the corner from a brewery. Spirits are high, and everyone is ready to take on 80 miles for day two.

Day 2

A nice gentle morning and a great spot for lunch in Santa Cruz watching dolphins out to sea. Unfortunately, the group had a more difficult afternoon with 30 miles of strong headwinds and a terrible road surface. Thankfully day 3 isn’t as long.

Day 3

A short (47 mile) but hilly day today for the group who head out from Monterey heading to Big Sur. Probably one of the best riding days the group has had with a strong tail wind helping them up the hills and some spectacular views. Day 4 will be a challenge 120km and 6,000ft to climb.

Day 4

Today was one of the hardest days the group faced. 6:30am start to a 120km day with 6000ft of climb. However, the difficult day was worth it with spectacular views and a chance to meet the local elephant seals.

Day 5

Things were a bit easier day with only 56 miles and a slower pace. The group found a great ice cream shop on the beach in Santa Barbra. Final day tomorrow.

Final Day

An interesting final day. Lots traffic and a small reception greeted the group as they cycled the last 4 miles together. Chris said that ‘This has been one of the best weeks of my life!  What a phenomenal bunch of people!’ Let’s not forget that all this has been to help raise money for a worthwhile cause.
